Loans board employees plead not guilty in K335m theft case

Two people who were arrested in relation to theft of K335 million at Higher Education Students’ Loans and Grants Board (HESLGB) have pleaded not guilty to counts bordering on theft by a person employed in the public service and money laundering.
The two, Chimwemwe Kaphagawani, 34 and Success Sikwese, 32, were arrested on Wednesday last week.
Appearing before Chief Resident Magistrate Madalitso Chimwaza on Tuesday morning in Lilongwe, the two denied all three counts upon being formally charged.
However, the State through Cecelia Zangazanga asked the court to further detain the accused persons for another five days on grounds that they are yet to wind up investigations.
But lawyer representing the two William Chiwaya objected the further detention arguing that the accused cannot interfere with investigations as they are no longer working with the Board.
Magistrate Chimwaza has since adjourned hearing of the matter to Friday this week for ruling on bail application.
