The Malawi Police Service has apologized to the University of Malawi Students Union for teargassing protesting students.

Police fired teargas to disperse dozens of University of Malawi (Unima) students who went violent after presenting a petition to Zomba District Commissioner Smart Gwedemula on September 23, 2022. The students were protesting against what they called inconsiderate academic calendar which has five months holiday.

A letter signed by Eastern Region Police Commissioner Violet Magwaya says the cops will put measures to ensure that incidents of similar nature should never happen again within Unima campus.

President of Student Representative Council, Charles Dokera said they appreciate the noble gesture that has been portrayed by the law enforcers as this is has been the most peaceful way to resolve the issue.
