UNHCR condemns grenade attack in Dzaleka camp

The UN Refugee Agency on Friday condemned the grenade attack in Dzaleka camp in Dowa that injured five refugees including an 11-year-old child on Wednesday.

In a statement, UNHCR urged Malawi authorities to bring perpetrators of the heinous act to account.

The agency said it is offering support to the victims and their families with food and non-food items.

“Three of the victims in critical condition have been referred to Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe for specialized treatment,” the statement reads.

On Thursday police arrested a Rwandan, Umoton John Peter, 42 in connection with the attack.

Dzaleka Camp currently hosts over 56,000 refugees and asylum seekers.
