PP, DPP leaders in war of words

By Chifundo Masanche

People’s Party (PP) has condemned former President Peter Mutharika for mockingly referring the party’s president Dr Joyce Banda as “Abiti Cashgate”.

Mutharika, who is also the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) president, made the remarks at a political rally in Mangochi on December 17, 2022.

A letter released by PP signed by its spokesperson Ackson Kalaile Banda said what Mutharika has done is uncalled for and beneath what is expected of him as a leader.

The party says it does not want to be forced to address Mutharika as Mr. Cement in reference to the alleged K5 billion cement gate scandal.

“Malawians also know that he gave leeway to his cronies to abuse his Taxpayer Identification Number (TPIN) for other unrelated interests,” the statement reads.

“We will continue to resist the temptation to call him Mr. Cement.”
