The Principal Resident Magistrate Court in Lilongwe has sentenced a 47-year-old primary school teacher, Jonas Duncan to 16 years in prison for defiling his student.
The girl is an orphan being housed at a certain orphanage in Lilongwe.
Lilongwe Police Station prosecutor Tisungane Makiyi told the court that Duncan lied to the girl that he will sit for Primary School Leaving Certificate of Education (PSLCE) examination on behalf of her.
Makiyi added that Duncan told the girl to go to his house to cook for him saying his wife was not around.
“Duncan later defiled her in his bedroom and gave her K2 000 as a token of appreciation and also to buy her silence,” Makiyi told the court.
The girl revealed everything after being pressured by the orphanage matron leading to the arrest of Duncan.
Passing his sentence, Principal Resident Magistrate Rodrick Michongwe said Duncan deserves stiff punishment saying that as a teacher he had the responsibility to take care of the girl without taking advantage of her vulnerability.
Duncan hails from Kholomana Village, Traditional Authority Chikumbu in Mulanje District.
