Tropical Storm ALVARO lands in Madagascar as Met downplays impact

The Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services (DCCMS) says Tropical Storm ALVARO has made landfall over south-west coast of Madagascar.

According to the Department’s spokesperson Yobu Kachiwanda, at its current location, the tropical storm has no direct impact on Malawi weather.

He said: “Tropical Storm ALVARO has now made landfall over Madagascar and is weakening and having moved away from mainland Africa and away from Mozambique Channel.

“Chances of affecting Malawi are very slim and we can as well say this is the last statement on ALVARO, no more huge impact on Malawi.”

Kachiwanda has however stressed that the combined effect of the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ICTZ) and Congo Air Mass over Malawi will sustain heavy rains and occasional thunderstorms mainly over central, northern and lakeshore areas.

DCCMS said it will continue monitoring the movement and strength of the Storm. Any potential impacts on Malawi weather will promptly be communicated to the nation.
