The Ministry of Trade and Industry has stated that it has not yet taken action in response to the United States’ recently announced tariffs on Malawian imports, as it awaits formal communication from the US government.
Earlier this week, US President Donald Trump imposed a 17% tariff on goods imported from Malawi.
However, the Malawian government became aware of the decision through social media, according to Ministry Public Relations Officer Patrick Botha.
“We are still waiting for official notification before we can take any steps or issue a formal statement,” Botha told YFM on Friday.
Economic analyst Derrick Mina has advised the government to use this development as an opportunity to diversify Malawi’s export markets and reduce dependence on US trade.
