Zomba District Council investigates missing K 75 million

Zomba District Council is investigating the missing K 75 million meant for the education sector in the 2016-17 financial year.

The council’s chairperson, Chikumbutso Likandawe said this follows allegations that the money did not benefit schools in the district but rather some greedy people who used it for their own benefit.

Likandawe said follow ups have been made so far with responsible officers to find out what transpired.

“We tried to follow it up with the chairperson of Education Service Committee and he met the District Education Manager (DEM),” he told YFM.

Likandawe disclosed that their inquiry in schools found that they were balances that were supposed to be paid on School Improvement Grant (SIG).

“When we checked with respective head teachers in different schools we hear that there were balances that were supposed to be paid on School Improvement Grant (SIG) from 2015-16 financial year.”

He added that they are currently waiting for a final report on the matter.

“We are yet to come up with a final report so if everything has been finalized we will come back to you,” Likandawe added.
