Red Cross rolls out lean season response

Malawi Red Cross Society (MRCS) has rolled out the implementation of the lean season response program targeting food insecure families in Zomba and Mzimba districts.

Speaking during the launch of the program, MCRS emergency operations coordinator Louis Solomon said they are targeting 2,150 families.

“650 households in Zomba and 1500 households in Mzimba will receive K50, 000 for three months to buy food,” he said.

Solomon encouraged the beneficiaries to make good use of the funds.

“We have encouraged them that they should not do other things beyond purchase of food especially men. The money is intended to address some nutritional needs in their households,” he said.

Daina Taulo, a resident of Nakhumwa Village, Traditional Authority Ngwelero in Zomba said she had been forced to survive on a daily meal of boiled vegetables.

“Thank you so much Malawi Red Cross Society for this gesture, you have saved me. I will buy maize and enjoy nsima today,” Taulo said.

The lean season response programme is being implemented with funding from Swiss Red Cross and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).
