Fuel scarcity: Police warn against jerry can sales

Eastern Region Police Chief, Commissioner Violet Magwaya has warned service station managers and fuel attendants against selling fuel in jerry cans.

Magwaya said all perpetrators will be arrested and prosecuted.

She sounded the warning on Tuesday during an interface with fueling station managers as well taxi and Kabaza operators following fracases in service stations in Zomba.

“The law is straight that you don’t have to fuel into the jerry cans but because of your greedy, you demand something from the clients and fuel them. This is so dangerous as this fuel is being kept in houses and petrol is highly flammable,” she said.

Magwaya said police officers will be available to provide security in all the fueling stations once a proper arrangement has been made between them and service station managers.

Malawi is currently facing a severe petrol crisis mostly in the Eastern and Southern regions due to scarcity of foreign exchange.
